Depression is a common mental health condition.
It is a mood disorder that causes a person to feel some combination of downtrodden, low, sad, or worthless.
There are different types of depression, each with their own symptoms.
In order to treat the condition, we first try to discover which type you may be struggling with.
Depression causes a variety of symptoms that are emotionally and physically devastating, and yet may not always seem like a mental health problem at first glance.
Depression isn't "sadness" necessarily.
Do you tend to feel nervous or worry excessively about everyday situations and activities?
Do you experience distress over being unable to control this worry?.
Do you often experience unwanted physical symptoms such as sweating, increased heart rate, rapid breathing, nausea, and/or muscle tension?.
Anxiety is a common problem that can interfere with managing the various challenges you face each day and your quality of life.
It is also self-sustaining.
You struggle with anxiety, so you experience some type of fear response in a variety of situations.
Do you feel a persistent, intense urge to use a substance or engage in a particular unhealthy behavior?.
Does it feel like your need to use a substance or engage in an unhealthy behavior is consuming all your mental and physical energy?.
Do you need increasingly greater amounts of your substance of choice in order to feel the desired effects?.
Addictions are often hard to understand and even harder to control.
Addictions can affect you on a chemical level, and in many cases, they can create a psychological dependence as well that makes them self-sustaining.
Women have unique needs, demands, and changes both biologically and as they relate to their roles in society.
Everyone from blossoming young women to experienced adults often have transitions and stresses that they may feel they're struggling to deal with alone and could benefit from professional, ongoing support.
Long Island Psychology offers personalized psychotherapy and counseling for women that are ready to get the extra help they deserve.
We also work with women on mental health issues that include anxiety, depression, addiction, and more that affect those of all ages and gender identification, but the approach to support may differ for women.
