Azevedo Family Psychology is dedicated to helping you understand life's challenges, consider the options you have, learn the skills you need, and transform the challenge into a celebration. Everyone runs into situations where they are not sure how to get past whatever the barrier may be. Dr. Azevedo is here to help you find your path to the life you want to live.
Dr. Azevedo uses a solution focused, evidence based approach to help adolescents, adults, couples, and families learn and use the skills that will help you create a life worth celebrating. Taking the time to understand the stimuli and setting events that trigger behaviors in us that lead to outcomes we do not want is the first step in the change process.
Bringing to awareness these unconscious behavioral habits allows us to make a new choice, to re-train our automatic reactions into thought-filled responses that lead to the outcomes we want. Once you understand your automatic, habitual responses to situations or stimuli, you may realize you don't have any other responses for the situation.

In young adulthood, people generally struggle with the path out of high school to independent living.
The challenges are often whether to go to college, a trade school, or right into working.
These choices are subject to tremendous societal pressure.
Regardless of this first choice, we eventually need a paycheck to live independently, and a great career for personal fulfillment.
Then comes the next set of choices.
Humans thrive in companionship.
As independent living becomes a reality, many start thinking about committed relationships, marriage, and possibly children.

Planning a wedding is fun and rewarding, but for many couples, it can also be all-consuming.
In your haste to get ready for the big day, you can often lose sight of less exciting stuff.namely, the foundations of your relationship.
How do you know you're ready?
Because marriage is as much of a practical commitment as a romantic one, it pays to go in prepared.
Premarital counseling is a way of ensuring you and your spouse are at your best for this lifelong journey.
Premarital counseling is not a sign of a weak or failing relationship.

Simply stated, marriage is a contract between two people to create a life together with a mutual set of agreements.
The challenge is that many people never articulate those agreements and assume the other is living by a set of rules "everyone" knows.
The reality of these assumptions is what causes many people to come to me seeking to repair or peacefully end their marriage.
Love is an emotion.
Like any emotion, it comes and goes, swelling in us in response to events or thoughts of events.
Most of the time we are emotionally neutral as we go about our everyday business.

If you or your spouse are considering separation or divorce but are not completely sure that it is the best path, you are in a tough spot.
Discernment Counseling is designed for you.
It's a chance to slow down, take a breath, and look clearly at how you arrived at this point and what your options are for the future.
Discernment Counseling is a new way of helping couples where one person is "leaning out" of the relationship-and not sure that regular marriage counseling would help-and the other is "leaning in"-that is, interested in rebuilding the marriage.
