DBT Psychological Services of Long Island treats patients from all walks of life, from children with emotional and behavioral dysregulation, to teens, college-aged patients, adults and older adults. Much of our practice is based on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). This is a treatment that was initially created to help high risk individuals such as those who are suicidal or might behave in other ways that might harm themselves.
There are several components to DBT, including individual therapy, DBT skills training in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal relationships and middle path skills which help patients balance acceptance and change.

The "D" means "dialectical."
Dialectics is the way we balance and bring together acceptance and change.
It's the way in which we can look at two ideas that seem entirely contradictory or opposite as being related and at the same time, both having important truths to contribute.
Figuring out what's correct in another person's position and what truth their position holds that the others are missing give allowance to a whole truth, or what we call a synthesis.
The synthesis transcends the limitations of either idea and brings them together, it allows us the freedom to move forward together.

Over the past decade, DBT has become a well-recognized treatment for individuals who have difficulties managing their emotions.
You may have heard about DBT from a therapist or psychiatrist, read about DBT on the internet, or know someone who has received DBT treatment.
Despite everything you have learned and everything you have heard, you may still be asking yourself, "Can DBT help me"?
Your emotions can get really intense.
You may sometimes feel that you become "hijacked" by your emotions, and when they take over, you end up doing impulsive things (e.g., self-harm, binge or purge food, abuse alcohol or drugs, spend money excessively, risky sexual behavior) that you later regret.
