Services
In 1983 I received my Ph.
D. in Psychology from the University of Delaware's Clinical program.
My American Psychological Association approved internship in Clinical Psychology was completed at the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Perry Point, Maryland.
Following this, I worked at The Terry Psychiatric Center.
During this time I practiced Individual Psychotherapy, Psychological Assessments, Group Therapy and Family Therapy among other activities.
I received my license for independent practice in 1986.
I enjoy working with clients, who, though suffering from psychological distress, want to collaborate to restore their functionality, and experience their life as worth living.
During treatment we will carefully explore the troubling thoughts, feelings, and situations which are detracting from your well being.
Much of this work is focused in the here and now, and includes practice at alternative thoughts and behaviors with the goal of building a sense of resourcefulness and autonomy.
Some clients may benefit from understanding their emotional reactions at a deeper level so that they are not unwittingly pushed around by their emotions.
Valerie has had a private psychotherapy practice in Wilmington for most of the last 30 years.
She specializes in the treatment of families and individuals who have been impacted by sexual trauma, as well as those who struggle with or who have been affected by a loved one's alcoholism or chemical dependency.
Since 1992, Valerie has also been a tireless advocate for victims of sexual assault in Delaware and for their recovery treatment.
She founded and assumed the Executive Director role of Survivors of Abuse in Recovery, Inc. (SOAR), Delaware's only organization dedicated to providing psychotherapy services for victims of sexual abuse regardless of their ability to pay.
My approach to therapy is individualized and conversational, aimed at developing a respectful atmosphere in which troubling feelings, thoughts, and actions can be shared, reconsidered, and understood from a new perspective, hopefully with a sense of expanded choice, options, and decisions.
Whether and how to change oneself can be explored from a pragmatic, step-by -step framework to a more abstract and less structured approach focusing on feelings and meaning.
Emotions and action both come into play in any attempt to improve the quality of one's life, and the personal connection established between my client and myself can encourage effort and hopefulness in this process.
