A loaded word if there ever was one.
For some people, it conjures images of war and combat, Vietnam and Afghanistan.
For others, it's sexual assault or being locked in closets as a kid, being told over and over, "Don't tell."
Yes-combat, assault, and abuse are all considered trauma.
But what a lot of people don't know is that trauma encompasses far more situations and experiences than you'd expect.
As many as 90% of adults in the United States have at some point experienced something that could be considered trauma.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ("ACT") is an empirically supported treatment that is part of the "third wave" of cognitive and behavioral therapy.
ACT uses mindfulness, acceptance, and behavioral strategies to help individuals connect to the present moment, increase awareness and acceptance of thoughts, feelings, and memories, and take committed action towards their values.
When we are caught in a struggle of controlling our thoughts, feelings, and memories, we shift our attention toward avoiding or fixing pain and away from what really brings us meaning.
