Adults usually seek out therapy when they are facing life changes, a crisis, or a situation that causes distress.
If this is your first experience with therapy, it is less like medicine and more like exercise.
You work on yourself and find new ways of managing your circumstances.
If you have had therapy before, you may seek out therapy again at another time in your life, sometimes for the same or a similar problem.
As you get older, you gain a different perspective about your problems.
Sometimes your culture of origin does not recommend that you tell a stranger (a therapist) about your private issues.

A therapist provides an environment that is safe and non-threatening, allowing you to express your thoughts and feelings freely.
The therapist works with you to identify specific challenges that you would like to focus on, figure out ways to deal with and work through those challenges, and develop a better understanding about yourself.
There isn't one answer for this question, because therapy is an individualized process, it can be short or long in duration.
Some types of problems and goals for therapy can be effectively dealt with in a few (for e.g., 6-12) sessions; for others, it may take several months or longer.
