I am a licensed clinical psychologist and consultant. I specialize in using science based information and strategies to help my clients change their mindsets, increase self-worth, and overcome negative coping mechanisms. Areas of specialty include anxiety, eating disorders, and teaching clients how to use their mind to change their brain, so that they may reach their potential.

Of course I'm biased, but I see the pursuit of therapy as a privilege. This is not to minimize the true suffering and distress that brings people to therapy, because that very much exists. But, I do want to challenge any remnants of antiquated beliefs where therapy is somehow associated with weakness or defect. Therapy is an opportunity, not only for resolution of presenting problems, but also for self-growth, awareness, and actualization.

In other words, an available option to reach a better version of you. In session with a client the other day, I caught myself thinking about what I needed to pick up. If you want to have a better understanding of who you are, Dr. McGarr is the person to see!

I have a confession to make.
There was a period in my life when I remember thinking to myself I didn't used to be this way.
I wasn't as anxious, irritable, or as pessimistic as I am now.
I would have this thought repeatedly and though I wasn't necessarily putting it together at the time, I was waiting for something to happen for me.
I was waiting to "magically" return to my less anxious, less irritable, happier, more upbeat self.
What is somewhat ironic about this to me is, as a psychologist, I was fully aware of the brain's ability to change in response to experience (neuroplasticity), I had just neglected to consider that it can also change for the worse.
I provide individual therapy to those whose functioning and mental health is compromised in some way.
This is often the result of mood dysregulation, intrapersonal/interpersonal conflict, addiction, dual diagnosis, etc.
Depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance abuse comprise the bulk of issues presented in my practice.
Our first session or two will involve an evaluation of your needs.
I will then be able to offer you initial impressions of what our treatment work would include.
You should evaluate this information along with your own opinions of whether you feel comfortable working with me.
My approach to therapy is strongly influenced by interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), which seeks to explore and define the human mind and to provide a platform for how to achieve optimal mental health.
A central premise behind IPNB is that a working definition of the mind provides direction for how to achieve mental well-being.
IPNB describes the differences between the mind and the brain, elucidating that the mind is more than simply brain activity.
This is empowering, as we can learn to harness our minds to change the structure (connectivity) and therefore the function of our brains.
Adina McGarr-Knabke is a skilled, knowlegeable and empathic clinician.
Her amazing work that includes specialties in substance abuse and eating disorders with individuals and couples is only a small sampling of her diverse talent.
Adina is wonderful to work with.
She shows great caring and respect for you wherever you are at in your life.
I felt comfortable sharing with her and she challenged me in ways that made my life better.
To this day, I think about our sessions and the lessons she has taught me.
The only insurance I accept is Cottage Hospital.
I am happy to provide you with a super bill so that you may submit it to your insurance for reimbursement.
During your first visit, we will go over what currently brings you to therapy, the history of your problem, your goals, and a general biological, psychological, social, and family history.
At the end of our visit, I will provide you with my initial thoughts on your treatment and any referrals that might be appropriate.
You are welcome to ask questions that you might have about your treatment or my approach.
