When I first began therapy, I was shut down and suffering from unprocessed trauma from my childhood and a lack of connection with myself. I felt burdened by negative beliefs and disconnected from my body and feelings. I both longed for and feared intimacy with myself and others. With the help of a knowledgable, caring, and empathetic therapist whose style is also direct and confrontational, I learned how I impact others and to be curious about that, rather than judgmental with myself.

I developed the capacity to tolerate some sadness, anger, and pain, and to understand the way my psyche is organized to protect me from the pain of the past. With this knowledge I could begin to get past my defensive layers and learn how to open up and develop closeness with myself and others for the first time. EMDR and relational therapy (focus is on the relationship between the therapist and client) have been main players in this process.

With EMDR I learned how to begin to tolerate body sensations and feelings.

Anxiety, depression, and other experiences of disconnection from the self can be draining, frustrating, and painful.
The solution becomes focused on alleviating the symptom only to have it return again and again.
We search for a solution, yet the familiar uncomfortable feelings linger or similar experiences continue to happen.
Oftentimes, that's when we take the courageous step and ask for help.
