Forensic Psychology is the application of the art and science of psychology to issues dealt with by the legal system. Forensic psychological services include any and all preliminary and exploratory evaluations, depositions, oral or written reports, live or recorded testimony, or any psychological services concerning a current or potential legal case at the request of an attorney for a party, a court, or other governmental entity.
Forensic psychology has a unique and significant value to the legal community because psychologists are the only mental health professionals fully trained and competent in the administration and interpretation of psychometric and psychodiagnostic tests.
This means that psychologists are able to provide norm-referenced, objective findings concerning a variety of mental and emotional factors as they are relevant to a legal issue rather than expressing opinions simply based on a professional license and a number of years of practice in the field of psychiatry, social work, or some other type of mental health counseling.
