Welcome to OC Women's Mental Health, located in beautiful Newport Beach, California. I started this practice in 2013 with the goal of providing personalized and compassionate mental health treatment. After years of working in academic settings, I wanted to offer excellent, evidence-based treatment without bureaucracy. I see a wide range of clients, but I specialize in the treatment of women, with a particular focus on pregnancy and postpartum.
I am a board-certified psychiatrist, in practice for more than fifteen years. My specialty is in women's mental health and reproductive psychiatry, but I enjoy working with clients at all life stages and with many different issues. I moved to Orange County from Chicago in 2012 and opened my private practice in 2013. I am an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at UC Irvine and UCLA, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and a 2017 and 2018 Orange County Physician of Excellence.
Since 2016, I have been an attending psychiatrist in the Women's Life Center at UCLA, where I supervise and teach residents about reproductive psychiatry.

Services
Life can be challenging, and sometimes it helps to talk.
In psychotherapy, we work together to harness your internal strengths and resilience to find new coping strategies to help you move forward.
Just as no two people are alike, no two therapies are identical-some people need structure and guidance, and others benefit most from having a place to express themselves without being judged.
My approach is generally relational, insight-oriented, flexible and collaborative.
I believe that greater self-awareness leads to an improved sense of well-being and more satisfying relationships.

Medication can often be a useful tool, either alone or in conjunction with psychotherapy.
I provide detailed medication evaluations to help you make an informed decision about whether medication might help to improve your symptoms.
After prescribing medication, I continue to work closely with you to monitor benefits and side effects, and to listen to your concerns over time.
For people who are seeing a therapist who is not able to prescribe medication, I am happy to collaborate to provide coordinated care.

Whether you're planning for a pregnancy or are already pregnant, you want to do what's best for your baby without neglecting your own mental health.
As a specialist in reproductive psychiatry, I provide personalized consultation to women and their partners about antidepressants and other psychiatric medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
My recommendations are based on multiple factors, including medical and psychiatric history, patient and partner values and preferences, and the most recent scientific literature.

Sometimes people want more information to understand their personal consultation in the light of the best available medical and psychiatric evidence.
As an additional service, I can provide a detailed written report that includes not just a summary of your history and my recommendations for care, but also a thoroughly referenced summary of the most recent data supporting those recommendations.
Women who are planning for pregnancy find these reports to be extremely useful, as they provide a level of context and detail that is difficult to absorb in a 90-minute consultation.

In 2017, I sat down with Alexandra Spitz, the founder of Newport Beach's The New Mom School, to film a segment on postpartum depression for their online curriculum, the New Mom School Online.
