A Home Within
Learn more about the A Home Within-CASA Therapy Project serving youth throughout California. Our volunteers have fully transitioned to teletherapy, continuing to see youth through the pandemic. We envision a world in which every foster child has a relationship with at least one consistent, caring adult. We provide open-ended, individual psychotherapy, free of charge, to current and former foster youth.

A Home Within is the only national organization dedicated solely to meeting the emotional needs of foster youth. We recruit qualified therapists to provide pro bono therapy to one current or former foster youth.

A Home WIthin envisions a world in which every foster youth has a relationship with at least one consistent, caring adult.
To meet that end, we provide open-ended, individual psychotherapy, free of charge, to current and former foster youth for as long as it takes.
With chapters and clinicians throughout the country, we are the only national organization dedicated solely to meeting the emotional needs of foster youth.
A Home Within is committed to honoring and manifesting the diversity of our communities.
We embrace and nurture diversity on every axis: racial and ethnic identity; language and culture; gender and sexual identity; economic circumstances; geographic location; training, discipline, and modality.
We acknowledge the existence of systemic oppression and commit to breaking down barriers to accessing mental health services for all people experiencing oppression by and within systems.
We advance our mission and strengthen our organization by actively engaging with the unique experiences and perspectives of every individual with whom we collaborate.
A Home Within Impact Evaluation: In partnership with USF's Foster Care Research Group and University of Oregon's Center for Equity Promotion.
A Home Within has long been committed to documenting the impacts of our work through rigorous research and evaluation.
Since 2001, the University of San Francisco's Foster Care Research Group, led by Dr. Saralyn Ruff and Dr. June Clausen, has measured therapist-reported treatment outcomes for the foster youth A Home Within serves.
Findings show that A Home Within's model of open-ended, relationship-based, trauma-informed psychotherapy for foster youth has contributed to the significant reduction of mental health symptoms including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and dissociative states, all of which would otherwise have grave consequences if left un- or under-treated.
A Home Within and CASA of Contra Costa County have partnered to provide counseling services to foster children and youth in California through the A Home Within-CASA Therapy Project.
The Project provides California foster youth with one-on-one, stable, and committed relationships with volunteer psychotherapists who provide free weekly teletherapy and are supported by A Home Within.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) provide one-on-one mentorship and support youth in engaging with the courts, social workers, and other service providers.
