If you would like to use the wisdom of meditation, plant medicine, and psychoanalysis to understand yourself deeply. Or if you are dealing with change, stress, dis-ease, relationship struggles, or spiritual distress. Then talk to me. My specialty is the clinical applications of Buddhist meditation and depth psychotherapy.

I help people grappling with difficulty in their lives use the best of the wisdom of East and West to gain deep insight, make lasting changes, and heal old wounds so their lives have room for connection, joy, and meaning.

Whether you're new to psychotherapy or you have experience with meditation or therapy, I provide an environment for insight, expert guidance, and a deeper understanding of how to sustain a clear and vibrant mental and emotional life without stagnation or addiction, as well as the clarity, connections, inner process, and skills to move you forward in developing flourishing relationships. All based on thirty years of Zen practice and teaching, plus twenty years of clinical psychology practice.
Services
I am a psychologist, psychoanalyst, and authorized Zen teacher in Oakland, California.
I offer psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and psycho-spiritual direction for people who want to gain self-knowledge, relief from suffering, help with change or loss, and integration of spirituality with personal growth.
I am a Personal and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California, and teach and supervise candidates there.
I also have training and expertise in working with psychedelic medicine including ketamine for healing and growth.
Making the decision to seek personal inquiry work, therapy, or analysis is a big step.
Here is a bit about what you can expect to help you feel more at ease.
My fee is $240 per 50 minute session.
I am not on insurance panels, but if you have a PPO plan I can give you a bill so you can seek reimbursement.
My office hours are Monday through Friday 9 am to 6 pm.
Ongoing appointments are 50 minutes long and are held at the same time each week.
This regularity helps us get to know each other and provides a structure for us to begin tackling the particular difficulties you are struggling with.
Psychoanalysis is a form of depth therapy that is well suited to resolving long-standing difficulties.
I also offer psychotherapy once or twice a week for people who are suitable for this modality.
In therapy, we will focus on the parts of your life that are distressing you and work to understand and resolve these challenges.
Psychotherapy is best suited to people with situational (loss, life transitions) rather than long-standing difficulties.
I offer consultation to mental health professionals who are interested in increasing their capacities for psychoanalytic listening, learning to work more effectively with clients with a variety of difficulties, and working with affect (in both client and therapist).
I also work with clinicians interested in the intersection of psychotherapy and Buddhist meditation practice.
Particular theoretical influences include Winnicott, Bion, Matte Blanco, Laplanche, feminist thinkers, relational psychoanalysts, French psychoanalysis, developmental/attachment theory as well as Buddhist theory and meditation practice.
1. Can you take my insurance?
That depends.
I am not on insurance or HMO panels.
And I don't take Medical or Medicare.
But, if you have a PPO plan, you can often get reimbursed for the services of an out-of-network provider.
I will provide you with an insurance-friendly bill at the end of each month you can submit to your insurance company.
2. There are a million therapists on the Internet!
How are you different?
Well, I'd say I'm very experienced and well-trained.
I've been able to help a lot of people with all kinds of difficulties get better.
