I am a counselor and psychotherapist located in the West University area. I enjoy working with clients who are seeking to alleviate depression, lessen anxiety, work through past hurts, or better understand themselves. I have expertise in helping clients who have experienced traumas. I also have a special interest in supporting clients who are struggling with infertility.
I know that finding a therapist can be daunting. Fit is important. I encourage anyone who is interested in therapy to reach out, ask any questions, and set up a free consultation. I look forward to speaking with you! People who are traumatized often feel unsafe in the world and, perhaps more importantly, unsafe in their bodies. Their internal and external worlds are filled with reminders, and in order to cope, trauma survivors become experts at compartmentalizing and "cutting off" feelings.
Trauma is destructive, and at the same time, trauma is a part of the human condition. Therapy can bring healing. We know that horrific or threatening experiences can cause injury, but we also know that our brains and our bodies are wired for releasing trauma, for healing.

What is trauma?
Giller defines provides the following definition: a traumatic event or situation creates psychological trauma when it overwhelms the individual's ability to cope, and leaves that person fearing death, annihilation, mutilation, or psychosis.
The individual may feel emotionally, cognitively, and physically overwhelmed.
The circumstances of the event commonly include abuse of power, betrayal of trust, entrapment, helplessness, pain, confusion, and/or loss (1999).
The following is a list of some of the symptoms someone may experience after surviving a trauma.

In moments of extreme stress, our reptilian brains, or the part of the brain that controls our most vital functions, become activated.
This allows us to respond in order to survive: we fight, flight, or freeze.
Sometimes we can get stuck in these responses, even after the threat is gone.
Symptoms of PTSD may occur immediately, but they may not show up until much later.
Below is a list of symptoms someone may experience if they have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
You may avoid reminder of the trauma.

Dissociative experiences fall along a spectrum.
We are all capable of "spacing out" or letting our minds wander, but some people experience episodes that are more extreme and may interfere with their ability to function.
You may sometimes become so involved in a fantasy or daydream that it feels as though it is really happening to you.
You may find that you sometimes sit staring off into space, thinking of nothing, and are not aware of the passage of time.
People who have experienced traumas often become experts at compartmentalizing.

Different factors contribute to depression, including social, biological, and psychological factors.
I look at each of these factors in treating depression.
I do not use so-called "manualized" treatment, but instead tailor counseling to each individual client, based on their unique story and unique needs.
For some clients, a combination of therapy and medication can be the best course of action.
