A special feature of my practice involves collaboration with my colleague, Thomas Wales, in working with families. One of us will work with a child or adolescent and the other will work with the parents. We can then come together for joint family sessions in order to improve relationships and family functioning. I have had a private psychotherapy practice since 2002.
I also worked as a medical social worker for 18 years. In addition, I provided counseling and psychotherapy to adolescents in a school-based clinic setting for 15 years. I received a Master's Degree in Social Work from the College of St. Catherine and the University of St. Thomas. I have also had advanced training in psychotherapy through the Minnesota Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.
I am licensed by the state of Minnesota as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker.

Services
Psychotherapy is practiced in many different ways, which can be confusing to potential clients.
Because I believe that people should have a good sense of the manner in which their mental health professional practices, I provide information about my core beliefs on this site.
Also, since it is very important that there be a good "fit" between client and therapist, I offer prospective clients a free half-hour consultation either in person or on the phone.

I seek to have ongoing conversations with my clients about the challenges they are experiencing in their lives.
I endeavor to build trusting and supportive relationships so that difficult issues or problems can be addressed in a safe environment.
I pay particular attention to my clients' feelings about their important relationships and to their feelings about themselves.
I seek to help my clients feel better and to be less symptomatic; in other words to feel less sadness, worry, fear, and/or anger.
