Matthew is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) who graduated with both a Masters of Arts and a Masters of Education in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Since graduation, Matthew has had years of experience working at both the LGBT Community Center and Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) of NYC where he has developed essential skills to offer the most effective and caring therapeutic experience in a safe and affirming environment.
Ongoing trainings and other means of remaining active in the field of psychology consistently play a role in Matthew's practice to ensure the most current, ethical, and sound therapeutic approaches for his clients.
It's helpful for a consumer to know there are a number of therapeutic approaches and not just one way of doing therapy.
Matthew uses several of these approaches to tailor the therapy to each individual to work with clients in the most effective and efficient ways to reach all goals.
Some methods in the therapeutic process include but are not limited to understanding the impact of meaningful relationships in one's life, raising awareness of irrational thoughts and belief systems, increasing emotional connectivity, and strategizing behavioral changes.
Though Matthew is well versed and experienced working with the entire lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, there are slight differences between the experiences of every subgroup.
Being both gay and a man in our society presents a unique set of challenges and issues that can manifest and impact one's sense of self and ability to achieve the things one hopes to get from life.
Creating a broad and diverse awareness about what it means to be a gay man in our culture beyond "coming out" can be an important and often times essential part of the work done in therapy.
